Will the snow storms out west ever stop?

“Atmospheric river” to hit California and Western Rockies with even more snow and some rain as we all wonder when it will begin to melt

Have you seen the snow levels out west lately? The drifts are massive, some even as tall as the homes that residents are digging themselves out of.

Have you had enough of the snow this winter?

Rain is coming to the Western Rockies. Now, where is all that snow going to go when it melts? – YouTube: ABC10 San Deigo

Roads are being closed on a constantly rotating basis. I-80 through Donner Pass has been closed recently for days at a time, costing tens of millions of dollars per day in economic impact.

Drivers have been stuck everywhere from Donner Summit to the plains of Iowa due to these blizzards. Now one of those Pineapple Express jet streams threatens to bring in another five feet of snow, and possibly some rain.

Snow is one thing, rain is another barrel of monkeys. Snow piles up and you move it out of the way. Rain is a different critter that does what it wants.

Rain melts snow, turning all that fluffy stuff into a raging river

A strong atmospheric river is set to slam California starting Thursday and lasting into Saturday.

Local news ABC 10 San Diego had a feature about the effects that all that snow piled up would have on local waterways and reservoirs. As the temperatures warm Thursday, March 9, the warm rain will melt the accumulated snow banks.

Several rivers are expected to hit the flood stage Friday and Saturday. All this water has to go somewhere, but California officials expect the reservoirs to hold the snow melt this year.

Most reservoirs are currently at lower levels, leaving ample room for the melting snow to top off the tanks. They do not expect to see overflows that pushed dams to the breaking point in years prior.

Drivers should be careful of flood waters racing down the hillsides. Some landslide warnings are in effect for mountain passes and can happen anytime.

At night, flood waters can flow over roads and be hard to detect until you are too close to stop. And finally, don’t be the driver that drives through the river we see on social media.

Water is not meant to be that high on the truck and can infiltrate electrical components and air intake openings. That “oh, I can make it” moment can cost you tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.
