The 118th Congress is only a few weeks old and already we see new bills submitted regarding the current state of trucking and attempts to improve upon it. The Safer Highways and Increased Performance for Interstate Trucking (SHIP IT) Act was introduced on Tuesday, Jan. 24 by U.S. Representatives Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) and Jim Costa (D-CA).
The SHIP IT Act brings a lot to the table, from tax credits for drivers to funding for those going through CDL training schools and more funding for truck parking, which is very much needed.
What’s inside the SHIP IT Act?
The SHIP IT Act would provide tax credits to encourage drivers to enter and stay in the trucking industry. New drivers entering the industry would be eligible for a $10,000 tax credit while seasoned truck drivers would be eligible for a tax credit of $7,500.
Johnson and Costa’s bill also allows truckers to apply for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grants to help pay for Entry Level Driver training or other driver education costs. Also inside the bill are competitive grants for states or private entities to create more safe trucking parking areas by either adding, refurbishing or partnering with travel centers.
BackTheTruckUp has reached out to the sponsors of the bill and hopes to have them on our podcast for a discussion on the Act and how this Congress aims to help truck drivers and others in the logistics industry.
