This week on the BTU Podcast, Rooster and Justin welcome Sal Mercogliano, Maritime Historian and Professor at Campbell University. With all the issues going on with the ports now-a-days, we thought it best to bring in an expert.
Sal is the host of his own YouTube channel – What’s Going In With Shipping! It began as a pet project after Sal was invited to a BBC news broadcast to speak about the MV Ever Given, the infamous container ship that ran aground in the Suez Canal. WGIS! has now grown into a leading maritime news channel.
Sal and the guys get into a discussion about how automation has eroded the jobs union members once held. Since the invention of the modern computer, every contract the ILWU has accepted has made certain union personnel redundant. From the clerks at the gates manually checking paperwork to automated shuttles moving containers, there have been losses since Malcom McDowell introduced the now-ubiquitous shipping container.
Sal also gives a history lesson on how container shipping started. From the first containers hauling cotton to the standardized units we see today, Sal tells an amazing tale of how shipping has evolved.
