There was a serious hazmat fire in Lewis Center, Ohio that was so intense, it melted down the traffic signals hanging above the crash. A pickup truck operated by ONEH2 pulling 420 kilograms of compressed hydrogen gas cylinders crashed into a Toyota Corolla, causing a series of explosions.
The incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of US-23 & Orange Point Drive, about 5 miles north of the Columbus I-270 loop. The blaze was captured on video shot by workers at Lewis Center Close To Home Center, a local pediatric hospital.
The fire burned until late in the afternoon, with firefighters needing to use thermal imaging equipment to check for hotspots inside the trailer to detect cylinders that could explode when the wreckage was removed. Cleanup of the crash site and repairs to the road and utilities continued until 11:00 p.m. when US-23 was reopened to traffic.
Due to the damage to lampposts and overhead wires, the traffic light had to be decommissioned until proper repairs could be made. “No left turn” signs and other warning signs were placed due to the removal of the signal.
