On June 1 at approximately 3:20 a.m. MDT, a truck driven by Christian Andrews of New Mexico crashed into the Nogales, Arizona, Walmart off White Park Drive. The crash left a hole in the side of the building. Manager Jim Grow had the store temporarily closed until officials could verify the integrity of the building.
Andrews was taken into custody as part of a DUI investigation. Police say cameras caught Andrews “taking a running start” before slamming into the side of the building. As of June 3, no official charges have been announced against Andrews.
However, there is good news for the residents of Nogales. At 8:18 p.m. on June 2 Mayor Arturo Garino announced that officials have declared the Walmart safe for occupancy. The store reopened on June 3 at 6 a.m. local time. Mayor Garino thanked the Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as the Nogales police and fire departments for their teamwork with the Walmart staff and corporate officials.
