Here is an update on the bank robbery we reported on June 23. Brandon McGruder, 24, stands accused of robbing the Regions Bank in Marion, Arkansas, on June 21. And with his arrest, some very unusual questions come from the details surrounding the case. In particular, this quote from the police:
“McGruder, a terminated employee of Swift Transportation, allegedly stole the blue Volvo tractor semi-truck he is accused of using for the crime multiple times before. He knew where the company kept its vehicle keys, police say.”Action5News
How did he steal that truck multiple times?
Now hang on a minute, I used to be “based” out of that terminal when I worked for Swift. It was about 15 years ago when I first began working over-the-road. The terminal has been modernized since then, but surely the security procedures are breech-resistant.
I know everyone harps on Swift, being the newly adopted, red-headed stepchild of Knight Transportation. But one would think a major carrier with high-value freight contracts would keep a bit more stringent watch on its property. I’m sure more details of “stealing the truck multiple times” will come out in the wash, but let’s move on.
Meet the FBI’s CTFU
McGruder was detained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Cargo Task Force Unit (CTFU) on Tuesday, June 28. Video from Swift showed him driving away in the Volvo from the Memphis terminal the day before. (Yes, we’re washing out our mouths with pine tar soap for calling it a Peterbilt.) The truck’s electronic logging device’s (ELD) built-in global positioning system (GPS) was not disabled and led investigators to the truck and McGruder.
A warrant has been obtained for McGruder and he is awaiting court and extradition back to Arkansas to face aggravated burglary charges. He is also being investigated for other crimes around the Mid-South region.
