“Have we found the bottom?” That’s the question on many drivers’ minds right now. The Truckstop.com 7-Day Rates in dry van, reefer, and flatbed saw a small gain in price this week.
With the Memorial Day holiday coming up, I expected an uptick as drivers take the extended weekend off and capacity tightens. A few cents was in line with my expectations. With school graduations, July 4th, and other holidays happening, I’m hoping a few more cents each event will push the price back above the $3.00 per mile mark.
While rates going up is good news (particularly for small fleets and owner-operators), fuel prices are still flatlined at the high rates. I do not see fuel coming down anytime soon until we can get some refining capacity going in the U.S. With shortages on the news bringing fear of rationing situations both at the gasoline and diesel pumps, it’s easy for stations to keep the prices high without price gouging complaints.
