The truck parking area of the Lenoir City TA Travel Center was evacuated at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, due to a hazardous material leak coming from a trailer. Many on social media claim the driver was ignoring signals from other drivers that something was pouring out from inside the trailer.

According to the Knoxville-Knox County Emergency Management Agency, the leaking substance was peroxyacetic acid (also known as peracetic acid or PPA). PPA is listed under UN 3105, UN 3107, and UN 3109 and should be placarded as Corrosive and Reactive according to the Emergency Response Guidebook.
Two people were transported to a local hospital with severe eye and ear irritation. Loudon County Sheriff deputies, Loudon County EMA, Loudon County Fire/Rescue, Tennessee EMA, and other area first responders worked until 10 p.m. that evening containing the spill and remediating the area.
There has been no information made available on if the driver or carrier was cited in regard to the incident.
