Drivers looking to use the US 70 Bypass in Selma, North Carolina will have to take a detour after a tractor-trailer full of groceries broke through the cable barriers and overturned. The fuel tanks on the truck ruptured, creating a 100-gallon diesel spill.
The incident occurred near the I-95/US 70 Bypass overpass at around 4:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13. The entire westbound lane of the bypass has been closed and traffic rerouted onto US 70 Business.
Law enforcement and clean-up crews at the scene told local WRAL News reporters that the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to WakeMed for evaluation.
The overturned trailer was filled with grocery items and will have to be unloaded and disposed of before it can be removed from the scene. NCDOT road crews will be placing high-vis barrels and will repair the cable barrier at a later date.
NCDOT officials told local news the road will be closed for several hours.
