OK drivers!!! Time to pay attention to the guys and gals out in the freezing cold and blistering heat (along with us) – road construction workers.
This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week. States across the country are gearing up for events to recognize those out scraping snow, filling potholes, replacing “Schneider Eggs” for Easter, and banging the dents out of “The Trailer Shark Bridge.” Hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation, this year’s theme is “Work Zones Are A Sign To SLOW DOWN.”
Every state has its own plans for the week, and you can bet EXTRA ENFORCEMENT will be a part of it. The website has an interactive map of what each state has planned.
Each day also has national events:
Monday, April 11th was Work Zone Training Day; companies gave safety training and demonstration seminars.
Today, April 12th, there will be a live stream kick-off event streamed on VDOTLive on YouTube.
Wednesday, April 13th will be “GO ORANGE” Day, paying respects to victims and loved ones of those lost in work zone accidents.
Thursday, April 14th is “Social Media STORM,” encouraging people, companies, and organizations to use tags “#NWZSW” and “#WorkZoneSafety.”
Friday is “The Moment of Silence,” which is new for 2022 and is to remember those we have lost in road construction accidents.
On the site is a list of resources and guides from organizations such as WHO, OSHA, NSC, FMCSA and others. Also available are purchasable decals, ribbons, lapel pins, brackets, activity books and more. Proceeds go to the American Traffic Safety Services Association and other organizations that help with the event.
