According to reports from KKTV, Colorado Springs law enforcement agencies are on the hunt for those responsible for the abandonment of two containers of waste oil. At 11:00 Thursday, Jan. 12, the city’s Streets Division was attempting to remove the containers when one of them ruptured.
The waste oil from the container flowed into the stormwater drain and unfortunately ended up in Monument Creek. Hazmat teams and Colorado Parks and Wildlife were contacted and a series of absorbent booms were erected down the creek to contain the spill.
Colorado Springs Police are asking that anyone who saw the drums being dropped off on the street contact them immediately. Abandoning hazardous materials is a serious crime and can lead to misdemeanor or even felony charges.
