On Sunday, July 10, BackTheTruckUp received an Instagram post proclaiming that a possible protest over the situation caused by Assembly Bill 5 (AB5). AB5 has caused a massive headache for independent contractors in multiple industries. In the post, there is a call for a protest to begin today – Wednesday, July 13. BTU then began searching for corroborating evidence. Our searches came back empty-handed, until Tuesday afternoon.

Multiple drayage and trucking companies were told “We’re not coming in tomorrow.”

Sparked by an article by FreightWaves’ Clarissa Hawes, a deluge of comments and screenshots came into our possession. Multiple sources, some public, some off the record, sent in more corroborating evidence that something is being planned.

Alex Mai of “The Asian Mai Show,” a popular YouTuber and guest of What The Truck?!?, posted a video Tuesday evening of messages he had received. In the video, a message from a viewer says that a protest is planned to begin around 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. at the Bobtail gate for APL Eagle Marine Terminal at the Port of Long Beach.

Word is not all drivers will protest but still will be "several hundred" who intend to block access to major terminals. https://t.co/AePyWzCqCK

A convoy will then form and head to the Port of Los Angeles. People are being asked to bring flags and banners. Also, a viewer from the Port of Oakland sent Alex a message supporting the efforts in Southern California. Truckers in Northern California were planning a three-day strike to begin Wednesday as well.

    Update

SoCal #LosAngeles truckers start a 24-hour protest of a state law to limit the use of independent contractor drivers— the ‘gig worker bill’— many truckers own their own rigs, and don’t want to be considered employees.
